While you may never meet one in person, a pathologist can have a big impact on your health. A pathologist is a physician who specializes in identifying the nature, cause and stage of disease by analyzing body tissues and fluids. Their expertise plays a critical role in making an accurate diagnosis and guiding treatment decisions.

Anatomic pathology is a medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis of disease based on the macroscopic and microscopic examination of tissues and organs. The surgical pathologist provides diagnostic information for specimens obtained from the many organ systems such as gastrointestinal, gynecologic, genitourinary, breast, skin, bone and soft tissue to name a few, providing vital information to the clinician and patient for the management of the patient's pathology.

Clinical pathology uses sophisticated technology and instruments to analyze body fluids, blood, urine, sputum etc. The information obtained helps clinicians make or confirm a patient's diagnosis.
